Caregiver Support Initiative for World Alzheimer’s Month

Caregiver Support Initiative for World Alzheimer’s Month

In recognition of World Alzheimer’s Month, the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, in partnership with Solstice, has launched a Caregiver Support Initiative to provide individual supportive counselling and drop-in support groups at no out-of-pocket cost to eligible individuals caring for a family member or loved one living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

Individual Support for Caregivers

Eligible caregivers can access confidential, one-to-one supportive counselling with qualified Solstice clinicians. Sessions will provide a safe space to talk about their experiences, receive emotional support, explore changing family roles and relationships, develop practical coping strategies and focus on their own wellbeing.

Recognising the demands placed on caregivers, appointments will be offered flexibly, including online, during lunchtime breaks, after work and on Saturdays. The cost of eligible individual sessions will be met through applicable health insurance and funding provided by the Ministry, meaning eligible caregivers will have no out-of-pocket cost.

Free Drop-In Caregiver Support Groups

The Caregiver Support Initiative will also offer drop-in caregiver support groups at no cost to participants. Solstice will also provide eight drop-in caregiver support groups at no cost to participants during the initiative.

The groups will provide a welcoming and supportive space for caregivers to connect with others who understand the experience of caring for someone living with dementia, share experiences, receive emotional support and discuss strategies for maintaining their own wellbeing.

The groups are drop-in, so caregivers do not need to commit to attending the full series and are welcome to attend whichever sessions work for them.

Tuesday Afternoon Groups – 1:00 p.m.
September 22 and 29
October 6 and 13

Thursday Evening Groups – 5:30 p.m.
September 24
October 1, 8 and 15

Offering both afternoon and evening sessions is intended to provide greater flexibility for caregivers managing work, family and caregiving responsibilities.

Caregivers may access the initiative through self-referral or referral from Ageing & Disability Services or Dementia Bermuda.
